المصدر 24 - أعلن الفاتيكان، اليوم (السبت)، إعادة 62 قطعة أثرية مرتبطة بشعوب كندا الأصلية (الإنديجينية) إلى مؤتمر الأساقفة الكاثوليك الكنديين، واصفا الخطوة بأنها «علامة ملموسة على الحوار والاحترام والأخوّة».

وجاء الإجراء خلال لقاء عقده البابا ليو الرابع عشر مع وفد من الأساقفة الكنديين، بما في ذلك رئيسهم الأسقف بيير غودرو، في القصر الرسولي، حيث قدم البابا الهدايا كجزء من احتفالات اليوبيل الخاص بعام 2025، الذي يحتفل بالأمل، وذكرى السنة الـ100 لمعرض الفاتيكان التنصيري عام 1925.

وفقا لبيان مشترك صادر عن الفاتيكان والمؤتمر الكندي للأساقفة الكاثوليك، فإن هذه القطع الأثرية – التي تشمل كاياكا إينويت أيقونيا ووثائق داعمة – ستُحفظ وتُدار بعناية من قبل الأساقفة، الذين تعهدوا بتسليمها في أقرب وقت ممكن إلى المنظمات الإنديجينية الوطنية في كندا.

وستتولى هذه المنظمات، بدورها، ضمان إعادة الآثار إلى مجتمعاتها الأصلية، ما يعزز من جهود المصالحة بين الكنيسة الكاثوليكية والشعوب الأصلية بعد عقود من الاستعمار والقمع الثقافي.

تعود هذه الآثار إلى معرض أقامه البابا بيوس الحادي عشر عام 1925 خلال السنة المقدسة، حيث أرسل التنصيريون الكاثوليك أكثر من 100,000 قطعة من مختلف أنحاء العالم إلى روما للعرض. وشكلت نصفها تقريبا نواة متحف الإثنوغرافيا التنصيري الجديد، الذي نُقل لاحقا إلى متاحف الفاتيكان في السبعينيات، وتأتي إعادتها اليوم كخاتمة لرحلة بدأها البابا فرانسيس الراحل، الذي أدلى اعتذارا تاريخيا عام 2022 لدور الكنيسة في إدارة مدارس داخلية في كندا، حيث تعرض آلاف الأطفال الإنديجينيين للإساءة والإهمال، ودُفن بعضهم في قبور جماعية غير معلومة.

وتسارعت المفاوضات حول إعادة هذه الآثار بعد لقاء فرانسيس مع قادة إنديجينيين في 2022، الذين سافروا إلى الفاتيكان لتلقي اعتذاره، كما شملتها محادثات بين الكنيسة والقادة الأصليين.

وفي سياق أوسع للمواجهة مع الماضي الاستعماري، أبطل الفاتيكان رسميا في 2023 «عقيدة الاكتشاف»، وهي نظريات مدعومة بمراسيم بابوية من القرن الخامس عشر سمحت بغزو الأراضي الأصلية، التي ما زالت أساسا لبعض قوانين الملكية في أمريكا الشمالية.

The Vatican announced today (Saturday) the return of 62 artifacts related to the Indigenous peoples of Canada to the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, describing the move as a "tangible sign of dialogue, respect, and brotherhood."

The action came during a meeting held by Pope Leo XIV with a delegation of Canadian bishops, including their president, Archbishop Pierre Goudreau, at the Apostolic Palace, where the Pope presented the gifts as part of the celebrations for the special Jubilee year of 2025, which celebrates hope and the 100th anniversary of the Vatican's missionary exhibition in 1925.

According to a joint statement issued by the Vatican and the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, these artifacts – which include Inuit kayaks, icons, and supporting documents – will be preserved and carefully managed by the bishops, who have pledged to transfer them as soon as possible to national Indigenous organizations in Canada.

These organizations, in turn, will ensure the return of the artifacts to their original communities, enhancing reconciliation efforts between the Catholic Church and Indigenous peoples after decades of colonization and cultural oppression.

These artifacts date back to an exhibition held by Pope Pius XI in 1925 during the Holy Year, where Catholic missionaries sent over 100,000 pieces from around the world to Rome for display. Nearly half of them formed the core of the new Missionary Ethnography Museum, which was later moved to the Vatican Museums in the 1970s, and their return today marks the conclusion of a journey initiated by the late Pope Francis, who issued a historic apology in 2022 for the Church's role in running residential schools in Canada, where thousands of Indigenous children faced abuse and neglect, with some buried in unmarked mass graves.

Negotiations for the return of these artifacts accelerated following Francis's meeting with Indigenous leaders in 2022, who traveled to the Vatican to receive his apology, and they were also included in discussions between the Church and Indigenous leaders.

In a broader context of confronting the colonial past, the Vatican officially revoked the "Doctrine of Discovery" in 2023, a theory supported by papal decrees from the 15th century that allowed the invasion of Indigenous lands, which still underpins some property laws in North America.
